Kitchen & Lobby Project

Most recent photos appear first, at the top of the page.

Barbara Ferrell prepares lunch on Feb 20 in the Center's newly completed kitchen.  New stove and heating oven.
Bill Rumble & Terry Hough (Public Works & Engineering) oversee paving of the parking lot in front of the new lobby (July 26, '07) The new lobby decked out for our first open house on August 2.  More than 150 people attended. Move-in for the BOPARC Seniors began August 13.  Carpeting must be installed and other projects completed before the move-in is finished.  The new kitchen is now beginning to look like a kitchen. 10/10/07.  The stove hood and venting system is now being installed.  It will be finished this week.  Those who attend the luncheon on Wednesdays are glad to see this happening.

The circular piece of equipment is the cap for the hood vent.  Behind it is the new stove, both to be put in place this week. The new lobby begins to fill up with items to be placed in various rooms when our occupancy permit has been issued (Sept. 13, 07) More stuff arrives in BOPARC trucks.  As things were being moved in, a bridge game was already underway in the new lobby (not pictured because I left my camera at home).
Notice that the janitor's storage closet (photo 2 above) has been removed to make room for a serving line in the new kitchen. A worker for Veritas Construction cuts a new doorway that will provide stairway access from the new lobby to the Director's office and sitting room on the main floor of the school.  Windows have been removed and will be blocked in as per fire marshall requirements for a 2 hour fire wall. The new lobby area.  By the first of next week, the first week of March, we will be able to show block being laid for the lobby walls. n this and the following photo, construction debris.
Feb. 6, '07.  Gravel base for poured concrete floor.  Ditch in foreground is for front wall & entrance to the new lobby. Notice that gravel inclines upward right to left by gym wall to create handicap entrance ramp from lobby to gym Doorway from new lobby to director's office.  A stairway will provide access to this new doorway. Metal studs define various work spaces in the new kitchen in this and the next photo.
Sam Proctor of Veritas Contracting fork-lifts the beams from the truck for transport to a staging area near the school. It was slow going down Eureka to the school.  The beams overlapped the curbs of the street by several feet on both sides. April 12, '07.  In this and the two following photos, the roof beams are being lifted into place.   With the roof on the lobby, and a pyramid skylight in the middle of it, finishing work will begin on the lobby itself.  The kitchen is also moving along very nicely.
Doorway and window of the new entrance and lobby.  With good weather this week, March 19, the walls will be finished and the roof will go on. Inside new lobby looking toward tot lot.  The floor has been poured and the roof is ready to go on. March 27, '07. Handicap access ramp from lobby to gym.  The white pipes in background are drain connections for a unisex bathroom. Old Window openings being filled in with brick and block to create a two-hour fire break between new lobby and director's office/lounge room. 3/27/07 Fabricated steel roof beams arrive by semi from Alabama.  The streets are too narrow for the driver to get any closer to the school than Eureka Drive.
Sunday, June 3, '07.  Installation of drywall will be completed today in the new lobby.  Finishing work will be done this week, along with painting. Grid work is in place for the drop ceiling in the kitchen.  Door frames will be painted and doors installed this coming week.  Equipment should be installed by mid month. Grid work is in place for the drop ceiling in the kitchen.  Door frames will be painted and doors installed this coming week.  Equipment should be installed by mid month. Once these light fixtures and heating vents are put in place, the ceiling of the Lounge Room will be complete. June 18, 2007.  The skylight in the new lobby.
Cement pad poured at entrance to the new lobby.  The rest of the area in front of the lobby will be blacktop. Stairway between new lobby and director's office being installed last weekend.  Sam Proctor (red shirt) is owner of Veritas Contracting. Stairway installed. Doors and window of new lobby now in place (6/18/07). A family enjoys Sunday brunch under the old maple tree in Wiles Hill Park.  The tree has been there since 1910 (we think) and will be remembered by all alumni of the school.
The band room and breezeway to the gym as it looked up until last week (Feb. 20, '07). The round containers were for removal of asbestos tile. The band room just after the asbestos tiles were removed and before kitchen renovation began last week. The breezeway is now gone and the asphalt has been dozed away to make room for a cement floor for the new lobby and handicap entrance. Here's the band room today as work is underway to provide utilities for the new kitchen.  The next two photos show other perspectives on this renovation.
Carlos, Kennedy Center inmate, paints walls of new lobby (June 30, '07) Harold, also from the Kennedy Center, paints another wall of the new lobby. New drainage system being installed in preparation for paving in front of new lobby. (July 6) Amy, RSVP director, and Hobe, assistant to the senior center director, paint stairway in new lobby.
